Introduction

Evadoc was founded as an archive and documentation centre for churches, organisations and individuals who belong to the protestant-evangelical community. Plans for a centre had been underway for many years, as it was feared that important archives, publications and audio-visual material of the protestant-evangelical movement in Belgium could be lost - current material tends to take precedence over archive maintenance. Discussions began in 2005 at the Evangelical Theology Faculty (ETF) and included the Federal Synod, which represents the evangelical movement to the government. This eventually led to the founding of Evadoc, a non-profit organisation, on 26 May 2009.

As a centre of expertise, Evadoc aims to collect, present and preserve Evangelical Protestant heritage in its Belgian and international context from the 19th Century onward. It also advises and trains those within the Evangelical Protestant community who are creating and/or maintaining archives.

For the realisation of its objectives, Evadoc works closely together with KADOC – K.U. Leuven, the Documentation and Research Center for Religion, Culture and Society of the Catholic University at Leuven. This way of working enables Evadoc to use KADOC's expertise and infrastructure in preserving, describing and presenting heritage. The collaboration between Evadoc and KADOC is regulated by a Protocol, and there is a Joint Steering Group that coordinates contacts and dictates the general guidelines for heritage maintenance.

Thanks to financial support from the Flemish authorities, KADOC has appointed a part-time worker for its Evangelical Protestant heritage, who works specifically at Evadoc.
